GILGIT: PML-N chief Mian Nawaz sharif offered on Monday full support to the regional government in eradicating sectarian militancy and extremism.
Speaking to reporters and the members of the Masajid Boards of Gilgit separately, Nawaz Sharif, while making it clear that he was not in the region to criticise the government, however, called for joint efforts to get the nation rid of the menace of militancy.
He had arrived in Gilgit to distribute cheques of Rs500,000 each among the heirs of the troops buried in an avalanche in Gayari sector of Siachen in April. He also held meetings with party office-holders.
Regarding durable peace in GB, Mr Sharif said he would personally talk to chief minister, inspector general police and chief secretary. “I would stay in Giglti if it was necessary for establishment of peace,” he stated.
Mr Sharif regretted that none had been arrested in the wake of the recent killings, saying that miscreants needed to be eradicated from the society. “The first and foremost responsibility of the government of time is to chase the perpetrators and give them exemplary punishment,” he remarked.
He said doctors, professors, teachers and judges were being killed by the terrorists, who he said were roaming freely. He said government machinery lacked commitment or was incapacitated to control the situation.
Mr Sharif said situation in Balochistan was not invisible and everybody knew what happened there, adding killing of Hazara people had saddened him to the core.
He said Pakistan was outcome of the joint struggle of every community under the dynamic command of Quid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah and it was the country of all sects and religions, including Hindus, Sikhs, Ahmadis.
He said hate mongers were not worth calling humans and it was the collective responsibility of all countrymen to wage a war against them and root them out.
Replying to a question regarding formation of new provinces, he said statement of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani was on record in which he asserted that Sarikistan province would be disastrous for country. He said new provinces should be formed on the basis of administrative needs. He, however, said talking about new provinces at this stage was like a conspiracy against country.
Nawaz Sharif said his party was the first which demanded restoration of old status of Bahawalpur. He stated the interior minister was just issuing statements that culprits would be arrested within 24 hours, saying the minister should stay in Gilgit-Baltistan until situation improved.
He said industry had been crippled due to loadshedding, adding the government had not taken practical measures to turn the situation around.
